What is Looker Studio?

Looker Studio – formerly known as Google Data Studio – is a free data visualization tool. It turns raw data from different sources into understandable, interactive reports and dashboards. Instead of columns of numbers in tables, you see trends, developments and outliers at a glance – the basis for well-founded decisions. From marketing analysis through sales performance to website traffic, almost every use case can be mapped.

The name changed in 2022: Google Data Studio became Looker Studio. The functionality and free availability have remained; you find the tool at lookerstudio.google.com. To get started you only need a Google account – ideally the same one you use for Google Analytics 4, the Google Search Console or Google Ads.

Connecting data sources

The strength of Looker Studio lies in its connectors. The tool offers native connections to many Google products – including Google Analytics (GA4), Google Sheets, Google Ads, BigQuery, Search Console and YouTube Analytics. Via partner connectors you additionally reach third parties like Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads or databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL.

This is how you connect a GA4 property, for example:

  1. In Looker Studio, click "Create" and choose "Data source".
  2. From the connector list, select "Google Analytics".
  3. Authorize the connection.
  4. Choose account and Property. Unlike the old Google Data Studio with Universal Analytics, GA4 no longer has data views (Views) – so you only choose account and property.
  5. Click "Connect". Then the list of all available fields (dimensions and metrics) appears.
  6. Save the data source with "Add to report".

Via connectors, several data sources flow together into a single Looker Studio dashboard.

Creating and designing reports

After connecting, you start either with an empty report or with a template from the gallery – for example for e-commerce revenue, SEO performance or social media. A blank sheet gives you maximum freedom, a template a quick, best-practice-oriented start.

Adding and customizing charts

Charts are the heart of every report. Via "Add a chart" you choose the appropriate type. Each chart has two configuration areas on the right: under Setup you define *which* data is shown – data source, dimensions (e.g. date, channel), metrics (e.g. clicks, revenue), filters and sorting. Under Style you determine *how* they look – colors, fonts, axes.

Common chart types:

  • Scorecards: highlight a single KPI (total clicks, conversion rate), including a comparison period.
  • Time series charts: show developments over time, such as organic clicks per day.
  • Bar and column charts: compare values across categories, e.g. sessions per channel.
  • Tables: present details with multiple dimensions, optionally with heatmaps.
  • Geo charts: visualize geographic data.
  • Pie and donut charts: show shares of a whole – use sparingly.

As a reminder: dimensions are attributes of the data (city, date), metrics are quantitative values that allow calculations (revenue, sessions).

Controls for interactivity

With controls, viewers filter the report themselves. The date range control adjusts all charts to a chosen period. The data control lets users switch between data sources – handy for reports that cover several projects. Filter controls (dropdowns, input fields) narrow data down by countries, campaigns or products. Via "Set at report level" a filter applies to all pages.

Advanced features

Data Blending

The data blending combines data from up to five sources in one chart. The connection runs via shared fields, the join keys. Looker Studio uses a left outer join by default – so the order of the sources matters. A typical example: blending website data from GA4 with ad costs from Google Ads to calculate the return on ad spend (ROAS) per campaign.

Calculated fields

If the existing fields are not enough, you create calculated fields. Data-source-based fields are available in all reports of that source (edit rights required); chart-specific fields apply only to one chart and also work with blended data. Examples range from simple arithmetic (Revenue / Users) through text functions to CASE expressions with regular expressions:

This formula checks the "Source" dimension via a regular expression and assigns a new value.

Sharing and exporting reports

Once a report is finished, you share it similarly to Google Drive: via direct sharing to email addresses (with read or edit rights) or via a link. Particularly handy is the scheduled email delivery: Looker Studio automatically sends reports as PDF at fixed times – daily, weekly or monthly. Alternatively, you download a report as PDF or embed it via iFrame into websites and intranets.

Tips for meaningful dashboards

A good dashboard tells a story instead of just stacking charts:

  • Define the goal: Which question should the dashboard answer? Align everything with it.
  • Know your audience: Adapt complexity and level of detail to the viewers.
  • Show relevance for action: Compare values with goals or benchmarks instead of just showing numbers.
  • Clear structure: Arrange charts logically, use headings – less is often more.
  • Consistent design: uniform colors and fonts look professional.

Conclusion

Looker Studio is the link between your data sources and the people who make decisions. It makes SEO reporting clear, automated and shareable. Through native connectors to GA4 and Search Console, flexible charts and features like data blending, you build dashboards that translate complex datasets into clear insights – free and deeply integrated into the Google ecosystem.
