Deep Research in one sentence

Deep Research is an operating mode of modern AI assistants in which the model researches independently for several minutes: it breaks your question down into sub-questions, searches dozens to hundreds of web sources for them, compares them, and ultimately delivers a structured report with source citations.

The difference from a normal chat answer isn't just length. A standard answer emerges in one pass: question in, text out, maybe with a handful of search hits. A Deep Research run is a multi-step process with its own planning, in which the model evaluates intermediate results and derives the next search queries from them. That's why it takes minutes — and why it's suited to questions a quick answer can't handle.

Rule of thumb: if you could google the answer yourself in under ten minutes, you don't need Deep Research. Once you'd have ten tabs open, it's worth it.

How a research run works

Providers differ in the details, but the basic pattern is the same everywhere:

  1. Clarify the brief. Many modes first ask clarifying questions — about target audience, time frame, market, desired depth. These questions aren't a formality: they determine the quality of the entire run. Answer concretely instead of with “doesn't matter.”
  2. Set up a plan. The model breaks the question down into sub-questions and sets an order.
  3. Search and read. It issues its own search queries, opens results, discards what's unusable, and follows up on leads it encounters along the way.
  4. Cross-check. Contradictory information gets compared side by side, and gaps trigger new search queries.
  5. Write the report. The end result is a structured text with source references, often including tables and a log of the pages visited.

Formulating the research brief correctly

A Deep Research brief isn't a search term. It's a briefing — with role, goal, scope, source rules, and target format. The general techniques behind this are covered in the Basics of Prompt Engineering; for research, three additional pieces of information come in that nobody else specifies: time frame, source quality, and how to handle contradictions.

The last point — flagging open questions — is the cheapest quality gain in the whole brief. It forces the report to name its own gaps instead of glossing over them.

Three workflows from practice

Competitive overview before a pitch. Brief: five competitors, each with positioning, value proposition, visible channels, most recent campaign. Benefit: you go into the conversation with an evidence-based picture instead of a gut feeling. What matters is instructing the model to keep self-presentation and third-party reporting separate.

Getting up to speed on an unfamiliar subject. Brief: basic concepts, current lines of debate, key institutions, typical misconceptions among newcomers, three further primary sources. In half an hour, you reach a conversational level that would otherwise take several days.

Regulatory or technical status. Brief: what currently applies, what's set to change, who's responsible, which deadlines are running. Here the time frame is decisive — and the result is explicitly a starting point for review by experts, not authoritative advice.

In all three cases, the same holds: a second, narrower run based on the first report often delivers more than a single very broad brief. Research is an iterative process — the same logic as improving prompts step by step.

Source criticism: the part only you can do

A report with lots of footnotes looks well-sourced. It isn't automatically. Deep Research can cite a weak source cleanly without recognizing its weakness. So check systematically:

The last point is the most important one and the most commonly overlooked. Spot check: open three to five pieces of evidence that a figure, a date, or a quote in the report hangs on, and read the passage yourself. If everything checks out, you can trust the rest more. If you already find an inaccurate rendering in the spot check, verify everything countable individually.

For anything that goes external — a proposal, a study, a press text — the rule applies without exception: Every figure and every quote gets verified against the primary source.

Lots of footnotes still aren't proof — what matters is whether the claim actually appears in the linked source.

Limits

Deep Research only finds what's publicly accessible. Anything behind paywalls, logins, or in closed databases stays out of reach — and the report doesn't always tell you something is missing there. These blind spots are the real danger, because a smoothly written text suggests completeness.

On top of that, there are three more limitations:

  • Language skew. English-language sources dominate on too many topics. If you mean the German-speaking market, say so in the brief — otherwise you'll get a US perspective in German text.
  • Niche gaps. For very specialized questions, the source base on the open web is thin; the result then looks broad but is actually shallow.
  • Errors remain possible. The mode significantly reduces fabrication because it ties statements to sources. It doesn't rule it out — misattributions and overstretched conclusions still occur.

And finally: Deep Research doesn't replace judgment. The report supplies material. What follows from it is your decision.

Conclusion

Deep Research shifts the work from searching to judging. The assistant takes over what takes the longest — finding, screening, and sorting sources — and delivers a sourced overview in minutes. Your job shifts to the two ends of the process: a precise brief with time frame, source rules, and target format at the front, and a serious source check at the back. Do both, and you gain hours. Pass the report along unchecked, and you've only shifted the risk.
