AI Mode in one sentence

Google AI Mode is a standalone, conversational search experience in which you ask your question in a dialogue and receive a fully AI-generated answer instead of a classic list of results. It is the further development of Google’s AI search beyond the AI Overviews – not just a summary above the results, but a separate mode in which search becomes a conversation.

The difference matters: an AI Overview appears automatically above the normal search results and complements them. AI Mode, by contrast, is a deliberately chosen, separate tab in which there is no longer a classic list of links – only the generated answer together with its sources and the option to follow up directly.

From SGE to AI Mode: the short history

To place AI Mode, a look back helps. In 2023 Google launched the Search Generative Experience (SGE) as an experiment in its in-house test lab "Search Labs". SGE was Google’s first answer to ChatGPT: an AI summary directly in search, initially only for signed-in test users.

Two things emerged from this experiment. First the AI Overviews – the mature, broadly rolled-out short summary above the results (USA from May 2024, Germany from spring 2025). Second the AI Mode – the more sophisticated, fully dialogue-oriented variant, which Google moved from Search Labs into regular operation from 2025. SGE is therefore no longer an active product, but the shared predecessor of both formats. Anyone who reads "SGE" today almost always means this backstory.

AI Overviews vs. AI Mode – the difference

Both use Google’s Gemini models and the same search index, but pursue different purposes:

Feature

AI Overviews

AI Mode

Entry

Appears automatically above the results

Separate tab, deliberately chosen

Scope

Short summary, then classic list of results

Full AI answer, no list of links

Interaction

One-off answer

Dialogue with follow-up questions

Complexity

Rather simple to medium questions

Multi-part, comparative, exploratory questions

In short: AI Overviews are the complement to classic search, AI Mode is its conversational successor. For you as a website operator, the same goal counts in both cases – to be cited as a source. But AI Mode sharpens the situation, because here there are no longer any ten blue links that could replace the citation.

AI Overviews versus AI Mode in direct comparison AI OVERVIEWS AI MODE FOLLOW-UP

AI Overviews show an AI answer above the classic list of results; AI Mode replaces the list with a continuous dialogue that includes follow-up questions.

Query fan-out: one question becomes many

The technical heart of AI Mode is a technique called query fan-out. Instead of sending a search query once, Google breaks it into many sub-questions and searches for sources for each in parallel.

An example: if you ask "Which CRM suits a 15-person marketing team with a focus on GDPR?", AI Mode starts several searches in the background at the same time – for instance "CRM small teams", "CRM GDPR-compliant", "CRM marketing features" and "CRM pricing". The results are bundled and merged into one answer.

For GEO this has an important consequence: your page does not have to rank for the complete question. It is enough for it to answer one of these sub-questions especially well to be cited. The same retrieval and selection logic is covered in the article How LLMs select and cite content in detail.

Query fan-out: one user question becomes several sub-queries and one answer QUERY-FAN-OUT QUESTION SUB-QUERIES ANSWER

With query fan-out, Google breaks your question into several sub-queries, searches its own sources for each, and bundles them into one answer – even a single well-answered sub-question can make you a source.

Rollout status in the DACH region, as of 2026

The rollout is happening in stages. AI Overviews have been a fixed part of search in the German-speaking region since spring 2025 and appear for a growing share of informational queries. AI Mode is being made more broadly available step by step: after the US launch, Google is rolling it out to further markets and languages in 2025/26, including the DACH region.

The maturity is therefore mixed: AI Overviews are everyday, AI Mode is still in the rollout phase and changing fast. You should therefore always check concrete availability and feature scope live – Google keeps changing the exact design. The direction is certain: both formats are growing, and the conversational entry is gaining weight.

What AI Mode changes for your website

The shift from browsing a list of links to a dialogue changes user behavior – and thus your requirements:

  • Longer, more natural questions: Users formulate whole sentences instead of keywords. Your content should answer concrete questions concretely, not just serve a keyword.
  • Fewer clicks, more mentions: In AI Mode there is no list of results for users to click through. Visibility here means: appearing in the answer and its sources.
  • Serve sub-questions: Because query fan-out splits a question, it pays to treat individual sub-topics cleanly and self-containedly.
  • Anticipate follow-up questions: A dialogue continues. Content that also answers the obvious next question has better chances across several conversation rounds.

The concrete optimization steps for Google’s AI surfaces are deepened by the platform guides Optimizing for Google AI Overviews and Optimizing for Gemini and Google AI Mode.

Conclusion

AI Mode is Google’s conversational AI search: a separate mode in which the answer takes the place of the list of links and the dialogue can continue. Together with the AI Overviews, it emerged from the SGE experiment, which itself is no longer an active product. Technically it is carried by query fan-out, which breaks a question into many sub-queries – which opens up opportunities to be cited with well-built individual answers. In the DACH region, AI Overviews are already everyday; AI Mode is following as of 2026. Anyone who builds their content clearly, sub-question-capable and dialogue-capable is equipped for both formats.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

AI Overviews are an AI summary that appears automatically above the classic search results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational mode without a classic list of links, in which you can follow up in a dialogue. Both use Google’s Gemini models and the same search index.

No, not as a separate product. SGE (Search Generative Experience) was Google’s experiment from 2023. Today’s AI Overviews and AI Mode emerged from it. When SGE is mentioned today, this backstory is usually meant.

Query fan-out is a technique in which Google breaks a search query into several sub-questions and searches for sources for each in parallel. The results are bundled into one answer. For GEO this means: a page can already be cited if it answers a single sub-question especially well.

AI Overviews have been active in the DACH region since spring 2025. AI Mode is being rolled out step by step to further markets and languages as of 2026, including the German-speaking region. Availability and feature scope change fast and should be checked live.
